What are the benefits of more brain power?
There are some specific benefits to more brain power. It seems logical to focus on two of these benefits:
Better performance: It has been reported that increased brain power can enhance performance, such as for memory and learning. The study by Pfeiffer et al. is not specific to this specific use of brain power, but it demonstrates how improving performance can have benefits on the brain and on behavior. It has also been shown that training improves performance on a range of cognitive tests, and the increased brain power that is associated with training is not related to improvements in performance.
Improvement of sleep: A recent study found that people who have a higher IQ have significantly lower levels of sleepiness in the evening. This was found to be due to improved performance of the brain's sleep center in the evening which is associated with improving performance.
Improvement of brain efficiency: In a study by Zatorre, Rabinovitch, and colleagues, it was found that an improvement in performance of a specific part of the brain (the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) was correlated with improvement of overall performance. This has led to an increase in the use of a brain-training called the "neuroplasticity" method. This training has proven to be very effective in improving performance and memory.
